Toshiba Mini NB305-N410

pros

  • 7-10 hours battery use reported
  • No fingerprints!
  • Large trackpad.

cons

  • Typically poor netbook speakers.
  • The tab key is quite small.
  • No Bluetooth.

bottomline

For battery time, this model comes in second to the Asus Eee 1005PE due to price point. For keyboard, it’s top of the list. For weight, well at least one reviewer put it on a scale and it weighed in at 2.8 lbs with the 6-cell battery, so it’s not one of the lightest.

features and benefits

No fingerprints! The nice matte finish removes the fingerprint magnet problem of many first generation netbooks.

There is a large trackpad, which makes it easier for many people to use. Separate buttons for left/right click on the touchpad, again this adds to usability.

Many report great display.

Don’t expect too much, it’s still a netbook. But if you want the best of the keyboards, almost the best of battery times, and under 3 lbs of weight, this fits your needs.

Matte Finish No more fingerprint magnet!
Separate buttons for left/right click on the touchpad. Much easier to use than one Clickpad.
Rated Charge (normal use): 11.0 hours
Use it for easily 7-9 hours without worrying about a recharge.
Full Size Keyboard The “Ahhhhh” factor of having a comfortable keyboard in a netbook.

Likes Likes

User reviews of this netbook are enthusiastic about the keyboard, trackpad, and battery time. The Pine Trail chipset gives this model the longer battery time due to its lower power consumption. Having a comfortable keyboard, 7-9 hours of battery use, and still under 3 lbs is very appealing. Toshiba has a great reputation in portable and ultra-portable computer solutions.

DislikesDislikes

The Toshiba Mini NB305 starts at a list price of $400. It’s often cheaper at places like Amazon, but that’s still without added memory and/or an external DVD drive.

Summary

Expert and customer reviewers all favor the keyboard on the Toshiba Mini NB305.

The N410 has a larger hard drive than the N310, and ships with Windows 7 Starter. The Pine Trail chipset means more energy efficiency, and that means longer battery times. Customers are noting easily 8-9, even 10.5 hours of use (rated uses are on the lowest energy settings, which isn’t real life use).

Weighing in under 3 pounds makes this a very portable solution for those who want a very usable keyboard. We would rate this number one for battery time also, but the price point is higher than the Asus with very similar battery life. So if battery is more important to you than keyboard, you might want to save a few dollars and purchase the Asus Eee PC 1005PE.

Thanks for the review. This netbook sounds like it is one of the most “laptop-like” of the netbooks.

If you are going to using a netbook for doing things (work?) other than surfing the web, like I do, it certainly sounds like good choice.

I am really thinking that this might be my best choice.

Still, don’t expect too much full computing capability. It *is* a netbook, not a laptop. For real work and portability, it’s probably a good idea to invest in an ultraportable notebook, something like the Toshiba Libretto series. Though in that series I have have a very hard time looking at such a small screen. And, of course, any time you have real computing power, you have a much more limited battery life due to energy consumption. Takes energy to power brains!
